Lithium
Lithium, derived from the Ancient Greek word "lĂthos" meaning 'stone,' is a chemical element denoted by the symbol Li and possesses an atomic number of 3. Its crucial role as a primary raw material for Electric Vehicles (EV) batteries underscores its significance in commercial applications. This soft, silvery-white alkali metal exhibits unique characteristics, being the least dense metal and solid element under standard conditions. Similar to other alkali metals, lithium displays high reactivity and flammability, necessitating specialized storage measures such as vacuum, inert atmospheres, or immersion in inert liquids like purified kerosene or mineral oil. Notably, its solubility as an ion renders it present in ocean water, and its extraction is commonly accomplished from brines. The isolation of lithium metal involves an electrolytic process using a combination of lithium chloride and potassium chloride.
